Challenges on Instilling Anti-Racism

Racism issue is a serious topic which it affects people’s emotions, physical behaviours, as well as their daily life.

When we are trying to protect the minority group and build our community a safe environment, there will be some obstacles along the road.

However, let us look at the challenges faced when we are instilling the awareness of anti-racism.

  • The intention of the bullies

We must be open-minded and have an open heart in order to accept the “differences” in everyone. All must understand that even there are different skin colours or appearances, we are all the same. However, it is challenging to change what people think. For example, there are tons of bullying cases in all the countries, and it is hard to control due to the bullies’ mind-set. Most of them were being through some phobia such as family issues or children abuse. Moreover, intention is what leads one’s thoughts and actions. When people have different intentions, it is hard to pull everyone together and fight for justice (KIRSTEN IVEY-COLSON, 2020). With this, we are required to pay enough effort and time, so that people can aware of the importance of protecting an anti-racism environment.

  • The courage to fight against racism

People tend to follow majorities and be affected by their surroundings easily. According to (Stewart, 2007), “Power is a thing of the senses.” When there is a common answer given by majorities in a group, the minority group can lose their bravery to voice their opinions. Similar to the bully cases nowadays, even when there are justice and positive moral values in someone’s heart, the real challenge is to be the one who stands out against improper actions.

To spread the message to the people, the organisers and researchers must obtain adequate professional knowledge on the background, philosophies, as well as acts related to racism before organising an anti-racism event (Ndumbe-Eyoh, 2019). For example, the speaker must do research and study the acts of racism and discrimination, before conducting a talk or a webinar. If the researchers have lack of knowledge, their viewpoint is hard to be highlighted and affects people’s thoughts (KIRSTEN IVEY-COLSON, 2020).
