International Issues:
George Floyd Incident

On 25th May 2020, a black man named George Floyd aged 46 years old was arrested by the Minneapolis police officers due to being misunderstood that he had purchased cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill by a convenience store employee.  Seventeen minutes later, the first police car arrived at the scene. A police officer named Dereck Chauvin crushed his knee on George’s neck for eight to nine minutes. Meanwhile, George was groaned in pain and cried out and yelled “I can’t breathe” repeatedly. He pleaded to the officer, but the officer ignored him and continue to crush his neck with his knee. Soon, George was unconscious, showed no sign of life, and was declared dead at a nearby hospital.

Shortly, the video of this incident was spreading immediately on Facebook and sparked uproar and raised debates about the use of excessive force while arresting black men.The death of George Floyd triggered widespread across the nation, and “Black Live Matter” protests began to prompt violence control. In the weeks following George’s death, there are more than 2000 American cities and 50 towns in all 50 states together with major cities throughout the world experienced some sort of protest such as the killing of Ahmaud Arbery in Atlanta in February and Breonna Taylor in Louisville in March. Anyway, the Black Matter protest had also peaked and shown out in approximately 550 areas with half of million people around the United States on June 6 which this protest is still ongoing despite there are having restrictions on gathering during the pandemic of Covid-19.

Therefore, the New York Times reconstructed and pieced together the minutes by merging all the videos recording from the bystanders and security cameras to analyse with the experts to lead to George’s death.  According to the law enforcement professionals, the officer’s restrain strategy or act of kneeling on George’s neck was unusual, improper, and unjustified in this incident where they resulted in the death of George, even he and witnesses screamed for help.

Finally, Dereck Chauvin, the police officer was arrested on 29th May 2020 and charged with second-and third-degree murders as manslaughter despite the fact he had up to 17 other misbehaviour complaints against him before murdering George. A jury convicted him guilty of all charges on 20th April 2021 and was sentenced to 22 and ½ years in prison.

In this incident, we had learned the important lessons that racism issues have been deeply embedded in the country around the world (Berkeley University of Carlifornia, 2021). Hence, we should learn not to distinguish or prejudice each other based on skin colours but learn to appreciate and respect every single individual. Also, this Black Lives Matter protest has also taught us to be anti-racist whereby to utilize our voices and fulfil our moral obligation and responsibilities to those who are suffering because of the battle as silence might be seen as consent (Elba, 2021). In short, let’s become a part of the change in fighting racism and influence one another to make a better place for our coming generations.
